Foxes are in the same family as dogs. Dogs obviously smell butts as identification from where they've smelled fecal matter/urine/pheromones around the area. A fox however is more clever and smells it's own butt hole before smelling another fox so can avoid confusion. Saying "a fox smells his own hole 1st" is saying before a fox identifies someone else's **** it checks it's asshole 1st. Think about it ;-)

Say a person says "Oh so and so is cheating on their mate." And another person responds, "Well how do you know?" So in response the first person say, "A fox smells his own hole." That person in other words means, they themselves have cheated and know a cheater when they see one. It doesn't have to be just cheating. Could be lying, stealing, etc. Hope that helps.

If a fox is in his den and he farts he will smell it before anything else does. So if someone accuses you of having farted/cheated/lied you could use this expression to suggest that it is actually the accuser who is guilty because he/she "smelt if first".
