Simply put, the more Mass an object has, the more Force you need to apply to accelerate it to a certain Velocity (or decelerate it). Image you have two balls, a baseball and a bowling ball. If you want the two balls to travel at the same speed, you're going to have to put a lot more force behind the bowling ball than the baseball because it has more mass. The basic formula is that Force = Mass times Acceleration.
