especially if the guy never treated her bad before, what would be the emotional cause?

Frustration, usually. The reasons for the frustration could get really complicated. But typically the frustration would alternate with anger. Chances are an individual who precieves to be "controlled" would actually have a bouder-line personality disorder. No offense if this is you, but when we loss the ability to percieve reality correctly this is usually a manifestation of a damaged psyche, weather emotional or physical. So really the "causes" would go WAY beyond being simply emotional, and more on the cronlogical. Time related.
