As to the last, there is still a good nine months to get a third party candidate on the ballot in most states (if not longer).

Basically, religious conservatives have two gripes. First, at least three (if not all four) of the current front-runners in the Republican Party have a weak record on the issues that matter most to religous conservatives. Second, they are beginning to get the impression that they are merely being used by the economic conservatives in the Republican Party. In fact, Mayor Giuiliani has basically said that issues of economic conservativism is what unifies all conservatives. Needless to say, many religious conservatives are not necessarily economic conservatives.

In short, to paraphrase scripture, it is impossible to serve both God and money. Religious conservatives are coming to the conclusion that the Republican Party serves money and power and could care less about God except as a tool to win elections.

It is unclear whether religious conservatives are annoyed enough yet to go their own separate way. Even if they were successful in getting the support of most religious conservatives, this new party would only pull about 20% of the vote. There was a firm division of opinion at this recent meeting of the major leaders among religious conservatives.

On the other hand, there is a movement among evangelicals for a statement of religious issues that goes beyond mere social issues. The Republican Party does not do as well on these other issues -- such as stewardship on the environment. As such, the leaders of the community are losing their ability to deliver a unified group to any party. By forming their own party, they could put foward a platform that dealt with these broader issues without being tied to the economic platform of the Republican Party. Even if they failed to win, their showing (if they do well enough) would demonstrate their strength and force the two parties to really deal with their issues, instead of one party ignoring them and the other merely giving them lip service.

They will never make a third party, on the other hand many of them may decide to provide support to a third party since
the Republican frontrunners have abandoned them.
