I can't criticize it either. It is almost irreverent to do so. It is the work of our national hero.

Noli Metangere is a novel written by Jose Rizal, the character's names aren't really existing in real life, but the characters are really true, like father Damaso,he was symbol of how Spaniard priest before were...having a discreet relationship with some Filipina and even had children on them...there's also that rich lady who mentioned in the novel being a social climber, always attending some gatherings just to be involved to the elite society but no matter she pretend to be part of,her real personality which is hypocrite really shows,in all the novel represents the real ''what's going on'' to our country before, and even now it is still.
It's a love story mainly of Maria Clara and Ibarra, but if you read it all you will find out it's not just an ordinary love story but an eye opening, that's why Rizal was been charged by Spanish people.

Noli Me Tangere is Not as everyone How they understood! It is much more than that.On chapter 25 of that book...You will see Crisostomo Ibarra went to the house of Pilosopo Tasyo, and saw the old man writing a story with helioglyphics and coptic figure, meaning those were coded messages for the future generation to come to decipher of it. The characters are the helioghyps and coptic figures. Pia Alba the mother of Ma Clara represents the true religion, kapitan Tiago is Santiago de los Santos who is James our Lord s Brother,Padre Damaso who raped Pia Alba the true father of Ma.Clara is Pope Damaso1,who is the head of the council of Rome 382AD,who is responsible for the introduction of Vulgate Bible, which is the footprint of all Bible, which is the real Maria Clara.
And that is the real reason why Dr.Jose Rizal was shot by firing squad,He is trying to tell us about the falsity of today s religion.

Many say that the perfect example of an ideal Filipina is Maria Clara. In the novel "Noli Me Tangere", she showed exceptional grace and meekness which made her an icon of a Filipina lady. But for me, I cannot consider her as the ideal type.
First and foremost, Maria Clara "lived" during the Spanish era where in the Filipino people's human rights were extremely violated and freedom of expression was oppressed. Never came a point that she did something striking to liberate herself from this oppression. Why so? Because that role was "assigned" to the male protagonist, Crisostomo Ibarra. She was not able to express her true aspirations and opinions.
Unlike Elizabeth Bennet from Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice", Elizabeth showed a very striking personality.
Secondly, we cannot deny the fact that Maria Clara is a weakling. She was not able to fight for her true love that led her to entering the convent ( as to avoid in marrying Llaneres). Again, she was helpless for Ibarra is a fugitive during those time.
She's also gullible because she let herself be manipulated in the hands of Padre Salvi (what did you expect during that time? Indios valued Christianity so much that blind them to the friar's abuse of power). She did not feel ever! that Padre Salvi had hidden, sinful desires on her.
So, why are you saying that Padre Salvi and Ibarra are friends? The truth is, Padre Salvi pretending to be in good terms with Ibarra while on the contrary, he wishes nothing but misfortune to the protagonist.
Perhaps you need to review your Noli Me Tangere.
Third, technically, Maria Clara is not a pure Filipina. In case some of you overlooked, Maria Clara is a lovechild of Padre Damaso (a SPANISH friar) to her mother. Eeew. Can't blame her though, she's a victim of her time.
I therefore conclude that Rizal's possible purpose of Maria's character is not to define an ideal Filipina lady but rather, to be an epitome of what our country's status during the Spanish era.
Maria Clara = Philippines during the Spanish era.

Noli mi Tangere was written by an openly gay Spaniard in the name of Jose Rizal. He became a national heroe choosed by the occupying Amerikans.
I read the book, I hate it, I forgot what it was all about. But the highlight there was about philandering Padre Damaso and his sexual piccadiloes. The first documented molestation in the Philippines.

The literal translation of the title is touch me not. Rizal derived this phrase from the Bible, specifically the Gospel of St. John 20:17, where it is spoken by Jesus to Mary Magdalene after he has risen from the dead. In the Gospel of John, Jesus uttered this because he has not accomplished his mission (He has not yet 'ascended to the Father') and hence, cannot be touched. Sudeten German writer Ferdinand Blumentritt says that "Noli me tangere" is in fact the professional nickname used by ophthalmologists (such as Rizal himself) for cancer of the eyelids.

just because you are asked to criticize it does not mean that you're gonna take a lens and look for errors or what.
discuss on the characters, their reactions in a given situation, what is called for? was it reflective of their time? is it still applicable or relevant today?
you could focus on padre damaso's overbearing character and relate it to history and to current affairs
