Especially if you want to be a bacteriologist.

Highest degree is not necessarily the best degree. What do you want to do as a bacteriologist, research, medical lab work...? For research, definitely go for the advanced degree but to work in a diagnostic lab at a hospital, too much education might make you less desirable to hire as they would have to pay you more than someone with a bachelors degree.

Major fields of study include bacteriology, microbiology, epidemiology, immunology, virology, parasitolgy and perhaps even some sort of pathology.

A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in bacteriology would be the highest degree in the field.

You may want to look at the many fields related. A common field in that area is epidemiology (the study of how disease is transmitted).
