Actually it's not cheap. It's very very expensive.

To do testing on a single mouse costs around $250
For a Rat, $500-750
For Larger rodents, it's over a thousand dollars per animal
Non-rodent animals are $5,000 - $7,500 per animal

This does not include food and bedding and cleaning that must be done reutinley just to keep the animals healthy.

Since most studies require hundreds of animals, the bill adds up pretty quick. So it's not cheap to do testing with animals.

This is for biomedical animal research testing ONLY, I have no idea if it is the same for cosmological animal research. For those of you speaking out against animal testing, I only side with you if you are against cosmological animal testing. Animals can die to help save human lives, not create the next awesome nail polish.

Excuse my French on this topic, but it is a sore spot with any and all animal rights believers. Animal testing is CRUELTY in any way, shape or form. Some perverted scientists think since "they are animals, they have no feelings". Anybody who has heard puppies or kittens cry in pain know better than that. But, scientists run tests on animals because they know they'll get arrested if they do the same tests on humans. You see, animals can't read about what will happen to them if the experiment goes wrong, or sign papers saying they won't sue.
If you know illegal animal testing is going on, do what they say on TV's Animal Planet network--R.O.A.R (Reach Out. Act. Respond)--and do something to stop it.
