The Philidelphia Flyers named Jason Smith Their Captain for the 07-08 Season.

Personally, i didnt see that one coming, i thought for sure it would be given to Simon Gagne.

Thoughts about the captain choice...
Should it have been Gagne?
Or someone else?

I think it's a great choice, like you though, I expected it to be given to Gagne.

With Daniel Briere, Kimmo Timonen, Derian Hatcher, and Jason Smith on board, you had 4 former captains to choose from.

This team will have solid leadership

I agree with the general consensus, that it's a good choice... and that I didn't really see it coming.

However, as for Gagne turning down the job... I don't think it necessarily speaks of anything negative, like Zapcity implied. (Sorry Zap!) I mean, just last season he said it was the year he was finally comfortable with his English. After hearing that, I was thinking, "wow, took him long enough!" He must be a quiet guy though.

I know there have been plently of captains who lead by example instead of being a voice in the locker room (like Scott Niedermayer) but perhaps Gagne isn't even comfortable negotiating or arguing with the refs.

This is a good choice. First, he has experience as a captain and did a great job of leading the Oilers for years. Second, the nucleus of the Flyers has changed considerably so he is not the only new comer. Third, Gagne appears to be more comfortable in a supporting type of role as opposed to being "the man".

I guess Gagne has repeatedly turned down the offer/request to be captain. I can understand a player not being comfortable with that responsibility, but I can't help thinking that it has to reflect on Gagne's makeup.

In our society, turning down a promotion establishes a career ceiling. While turning down a captaincy doesn't alter the ability to put up points, it has to bring into question one's constitution.

Smith will do just fine, but Gagne might have done himself a disservice.

I think Keith Primeau or Daniel Briere should be captain.
