I have a sleep problem and sometimes get my days and nights mixed up. However, I do contribute to this by drinking pepsi and unfortunatley smoking late at night, both stimulants. Also, I get on the computer, answer questions, play cards and this also stimulates. Excercising late at night will do this too. It is 11 now, and here I sit wide awake when i should be in bed trying to relax and shut my mind off.
Also, some countries or cities have a different lifestyle. Ever been to New York City, there are people having dinner at 10 p.m., I have friends in England that stay up until 2 each night reading or watching t.v. It is no big thing to them.

There are so many people that cannot get a good nights sleep, but the problem is different for each one of us. Mine is that my mind will not shut off, I have Restless Leg Syndrome, too much stress, etc. I do not drink coffee or any other drinks containing caffeine. I always wake up at different itervals during the night. Sometimes I go back to sleep right away, at other times it takes 2 hrs. or more. This wears you out and you can't function well during the day. I will not take a sleep aid during the night because it might cause me to be sleepy all day. We just have to live with it because this hectic world will not change. I stay up late so that I won't be wide awake at 4 AM but still wake up too early to get up. I lay in bed, sometimes I doze off a little, but it's not a good sleep. We just have to learn to live with it, unless we want to do drugs, and I don't.

I don't have a lover to keep me company at night, but that isn't why I don't sleep.
I don't sleep because I smoked too much pot and did too many drugs when I was younger and now I'm man enough to admit it. Sure, I could go smoke a blunt and get numb and pass out but that really isn't what I want. It's 11:00 here and I don't see me getting any sleep tonight. No big deal, I'll just sit up and answer silly questions.
Good luck

That is a good point but one thing for me is too much brain activity , thinking about too many things before rest. I work shifts and when I try and sleep after work I just cannot switch off. One thing that I find does work is meditation because it clears the mind complete.
Before I discovered that I used to take a herbal remedy called Valerian Hops and that used to work also, Canada I have visited there it is an amazing country I am very envious.

I've been awake all night worrying about childbirth and not being ready for the baby! I'm due to be induced in around 10 days and we don;t have ANYTHING for the baby due to the local baby shop being so crap, I've been waiting 2 months for all the stuff to arrive (I ordered everything from the one shop from the baby bath to the cot) and it is being shipped from Italy, they keep telling me, another few days, another few days, well that's no good to me after the baby arrives is it!!!! Looks like the new arrival will sleep in a box and be bathed in the sink, heaven knows how we will bring her home from hospital without so much as a car seat!!
I'm very stressed, add to this a huge baby bump, heartburn, peeing every 10 minutes and pain all over my body, this is why I am unable to sleep!! Well, you did ask!!!

People only can't get to sleep if they're not being worked hard enough. I recently returned to full time employment and now can't get enough sleep. Anyway my previous problem was that I'd lay there thinking about something, or do this thing in my head where I'd try pinpointing the exact moment I went. This, obviously, never worked.

Physical - the caffine in the coffee, don't drink coffee 2 hours before you retire.
Staying up too late on Yahoo Answers!
Mental - too much stress. Try to think about something enjoyable and forget the work and family worries until the morning.

A lot of people can't edither fall asleep or stay asleep. I think that the world is just tooooo stresssed out! We are all going here and there and working and going to school and divorced or addicted to SOMETHING. The world should take a collective breath and have a nap!

there are many causes of insomnia...
1. psychological factors such as a predisposition to insomnia, constant stress, or the fear of not functioning well during the day if you don't sleep, or the fear of not being able to fall asleep
2. lifestyles such as use of stimulants like caffeine, alcohol, weird work hours (such as being a security guard, police officer, ER doctor or nurse, paramedic...), inactive behavior or too much rest during the day
3. environmental issues such as noise, light, temperature, the bed you're laying in
4. physical issues or discomforts such as an injury, sickness, allergies, chemical imbalance (bipolar going through a manic phase), muscle cramps, diet (missing certain nutrients that help the body sleep, or nutrients that keep muscles from cramping up, too much of something that prevents sleep)
so after all that - i can't really give you a straight answer. just a list of things that make it hard to sleep...
