Hard Drives in general read from the hub and move outward. The closer to the hub the data is the faster it can access the data. As you add more data and programs they move outward and sometimes place files further away from the program. This in turn fragments the hard drive and slows down the access speed. Defrag rearranges the files and data closer to the hub, increasing the access speed.
