On newer engines, routine tune ups are not required. Because of the electronic control systems, emission systems, better fuel, etc., engines run at peak efficiency for a long time. The " tune up" today is just a series of inspections. The spark plugs are removed and inspected for deposits, uneven burning and damage, then returned to their original cylinder. Plug wires are water tested and the PCV valve is checked and cleaned. AIr filter checked and replaced if necessary and it's finished off by an oil change.

With most late-model vehicles a tune-up consists of replacing the spark plugs and spark plug wires, Distributor cap and rotor (if equipped), and performing a fuel and air injection de-carbonizaton.A fuel filter is also frequently recommended.

Timing, air/fuel ratio, spark advance/retard, etc, are all computer controlled.

Nothing.

Technically speaking now these days a Tune Up is none existent. Since car manufacturers installed computers in the cars that part is gone for good. The computer tunes the engine up like 100 times a second.

The words are misused now days. Is used as a Buzz Word for just plain maintenance, like changing plugs. That is not a tune up, you do not tune spark plugs.

In order to understand what a Tune Up is all about, you have to work with vehicles with no computers. All mechanical. The adjustment of the carburetor needles, ignition timing, throttle linkages, choke and many other things that affected by altitude and ambient temperature affected the performance of the engines. Usually was 2 Tune Ups a year, one for summer one for winter. That way you car ran it at optimum performance.

Now the computer does that for you.

That is why modern Street Rodders are called Tuners, they tune the car for High Performance by adjusting and rigging all sorts of mods. No to make the car economical, just Tuned Up to be faster.
