Tonight I was watching a base ball game and I was talking to my dad at the same time. He lives about 30 miles away and has a different cable company than I do.

He was seeing things about a full 10 seconds before I was. How can that be if the game is "live"??

There's about a 1 second delay between the family room and my bedroom here because one is running the new HD Digital Cable line and the other is just regular. Adding up all the possibilities of delays between the feed leaving the trucks at the game to the satellites to your local station and everywhere else inbetween through the grid to your home can cause some slight differences. So you're watching live television with a bit of a delay, but technology is improving everyday.

The satellite has the biggest delay. I've watched games on a dish at work. Someone who is listening on radio will yell out a result up to 30 seconds before it is shown on TV.

Cable has some delay built it, but not that long. It just takes a while for the signal to go through the system.

I used to watch football on TV and listen to the radio. The TV was about 2 seconds behind which was a bit annoying. Now I have Direct TV and the TV is so far behind I'm hearing the end of the play before I see it start.
