Find The Monopoly Companion by Philip Orbanes. It has all you could want to know and more. Don't be confused by a similar book called The Monopoly Book by Maxine Fabe. The book is cute but not really useful. BTW, the game is credited to Charles Darrow although he was inspired by Maggie Phillips. It's a long story...

I am sure this information is easy to find via wikipedia or just through a google or yahoo search.

However, I have heard the story and (assuming it was true) it is an interesting one. It was invented in the 1920's by someone who was not a professional game designer or who worked for a game company. He tried to sell the game at several companies and they all turned him down, usually because the game had too many rules. When he finally sold it, it was hugely successful.

It is much like the story of JK Rowlings, an unpublished author, and how Harry Potter was repeatedly rejected for being too long.
