It does not pay to invest in repairing such an old engine. Invest the money in a good used engine or a new engine. If you decide to fix the old engine be prepared to spend a lot of money for nothing. Something else will go wrong with the engine right after you fix the one thing. Take my word for it. Good Luck, buy another engine that's running and you can go from there. Or try to fix it yourself first. Buy the parts you need and change them. Buy a repair manual first and see if you have the tools and the knowledge to do it yourself.

a rebuilt power head installed is about 1500.00
consider 1500 as your budget upgrade to a newer model
you can get a pretty nice used outboard for that price

ask around, depends where you are at , you could find a mechanic like me who will do it on the side for a fraction of the price, but it also depends on why it needs to be rebuilt. I have twin(1984) 185 hp johnsons on my boat and they run perfect. you could get a price and the decide if you shoudl invest it in another engine, i do not recommend a 4 stroke, but hey thats me

More than it is worth. Take what it would cost and invest in a late model 4 stroke
