There are many ways a fish can drown. Certain labyrinth fish like Bettas and Gouramis actually breath air (instead of getting it from the water). If they don't have access to atmospheric air, they can drown. Most other fish get their oxygen from dissolved oxygen in the water. In this case, stagnant ponds with little dissolved oxygen can drown a fish (or any other body of water without enough dissolved oxygen). Another way is if the water is so polluted with toxic materials (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pollution), it can damage fishes' gills, leading to suffocation (in the water = drowning).

Can Fish Drown In Water

Fish can drown if they don't get enough oxygen, just like other animals. Drowning is basically suffocating with water. Since humans can't get oxygen from water we drown. If fish are in water that doesn't have enough oxygen to support them they would also drown due to lack of oxygen and since it's caused by water it would be drowning.

It would depend on the species but, yes. Labyrinth fish, such as bettas and gouramies, have underdeveloped gills and an organ that allows them to gulp air at the surface. If they can not reach the surface they will drown.

I suppose it would also count as drowning if there was not enough dissolved oxygen in the water, but when I think of drowning I think of an air breathing animal being placed under water.

Technically, yes. An animal drowns when it doesn't have enough air. Humans drown when they're underwater. Frogs drown when their skin gets covered up. So fish "drown" if they go on land.

Yes. Have you seen people using fishnet to catch fish? The fish stuck to the net actually drown.

If its gills get covered up. Or if the water doesn't have enough oxygen dissolved in it (this is why aquariums have air pumped in).
