If you're talking about the persecution of the Jews under Nazism, it was in the 30's, the Night of the Broken Glass (nov 1938) and passage of the Nuremburg Laws (1935) were the sentinel events. If you're talking about the high volume genocide of the Jews under Nazism, then the starting point was Jan. 1942, coinciding with the Wansee Conference. I've seen people debate all these dates.
My personal opinion, is the holocaust is synonymous with high volume genocide, therefore the Jan 1942 date would be my pick.

Start of the Holocaust
There are many different viewpoints on when the Holocaust began because there was no definite time. Many believe the Holocaust started when Hitler became chancellor in 1933.
On November 10, 1938, Hitler declared Kristallnach "Night of broken Glass". This said that the Germans could take revenge on the Jews, and they wouldn't get in trouble (Germany was in total chaos after WWI and the people were desperated and angry, so Hitler steped into power).
Many Jews were murdered or taken to concentration camps. This was the first day of the Holocaust.
