I believe that originally Islam was meant as a religion of peace, however I also believe that a certain percentage of Islams take certain writings very literal and are in fact extreme.
I have read many excerpts from the Koran and yes there are certain passages that could lead you to believe that it is not peace that Islam seeks, but total unequivocal commitment, regardless of what sacrifices have to be made.
Like someone once said "If your not with us then your with them." That seems to be the mantra of Islam from what I have gathered.
There are extremes in ever facet of life and every religion, however when one religion is so extreme as to harm another based upon it's own beliefs, I think that violates the very basis of religion itself.
Religion in any form should be about peace, love and the good in people, providing a moral background from which we can grow and flourish to be peaceful, loving human beings.
I know this is long and I hope I did not offend anyone with my answer, but it is the way I personally see it.
I just wish that we would all realize that killing does not produce anything except more killing. It is time for all of us to become civilized.

There for a while I thought I hated Christianity, but I grew up a bit and have chose not to hate an entire religion for a few stupid people's comments/actions. I think the case may be just that we (as a Western "collective") don't understand Islam and aren't motivated to look into it. All we're being told is that that's one of those religions from *over there* where the terrorists come from. For some people, that's enough. As for me, I haven't gotten around to looking into the Middle Eastern religions, but I am headed thattaway. ^.^ If those ideals are what Islam is made of, it sounds nice. For whatever reason I like the name Allah. It's kind of comforting, and while for now I'm okay in my chosen faith I have a very open mind. But then agaaaain... I'm of the opinion that all gods are one god, we've just given different aspects different names. ^.^

Absolutely. Islam is one of the most peace loving religions there is. The extremists are the ones that believe violence is the answer...
Nobody thinks Christians are violent, even though there are a select few that believe bombing abortion clinics is what Jesus calls for.

I strongly do. Just read history books to find out how peaceful the world was when Islam was ruling.
