Some sheet rock is different. some has concrete in it and some is reinforced with fiberglass. Plain old Sheet rock is made of Gypsum and has a paper covering and is fine for adding to compost as an amendment. (i also give pieces of the plain kind to my rabbits to chew on)... so if it is the regular sheet rock It is more of an eye-sore than a hazard to the earth. it is fine to let decompose in the woods, as long as it is on your property because it will look ugly. Why don't you try digging a hole, breaking it into small pieces and adding the pieces to the hole and cover it back up. or start a compost pile on top of it to help it along faster..... Good luck.

If it doesn't have paint on it, it's not too bad. It's mostly gypsum, a form of calcium, and also some paper backing. The paper will break down fairly quickly, and the gypsum will slowly dissolve away. It will probably look bad for a few years, though - it will look like a white mushy pile. If you want, dig a shallow hole and bury it. It won't hurt anything.

Thanks for being conscious of this, though. It's a lot better than if he had dumped used motor oil out there.

It's made of gypsum (rock mined from the earth) and paper (made from trees).

It is actually a healthy amendment to the soil.

Everything's bad for the environment. Even natural things like FLATULENCE for Christ's sake.
