He's not the kind of guy who will take on just any project. He has always made sure that he had a chance to win. The only reason he went to Tampa when he did is because that's his home and at the time thought that would be his last job in baseball. Things change! He's a good manager but I don't think he's a great manager. He's had many great players during his career.

He was a pretty good ball player during his playing days.

He knows how to win and turn a team around. Yeah he had an All star team in Seattle, but Cinncy and Tampa were not. Tampa has alway had good young players, but no veteran leader. The Cubs have a good mix of young and Veterans, if they stayed healthy and got off to a better start they could have possibly won 90+ games. If every thing is going right the Cubs have one of the best teams in baseball. Alfonzo Soriano, Derrick Lee, Aramis Ramires, Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly, some good young pitchers in Rich hill, Jason Maquis, Carlos Marmol, Sean Marshall. So this being said Lou nows how to turn a team around, but knows how to win with a good team. Joe Torry would probably be a sucky coach, because all he has coached is an All Star team. Put him on the Pirates and he blows. Some coaches can win with a bad team (Joe Girardi) some coaches can win with an all star team (Lou and Torry).

Lou is a great motivator. He brings a very intense attitude with him everywhere he goes. Some players feed off this and some don't. The players that don't won't be around too long. He is very hard on his pitchers especially when they aren't throwing strikes. He tends to get the most out of his players and he has put up winning records with every team except Tampa Bay (but they were a lot more competitive under Lou). Lou got out of there because he knew they couldn't win and he couldn't deal with the losing. In terms of managing a game, he is probably just middle of the pack it is his attitude that makes him one of the top managers in the game.

Players make or break a manager...The cubs just went out and bought more players until he was a good manager! I could make up a lineup and tell them to go play! As a packer fan, look how many coaches that were assistant coaches when Favre started his career, are now head coaches!...My point is, the success of a team gives the coaches a shot...if Favre never came to green bay, these coaches would have done the same coaching job but never got the recognition for it.

The Cubs lost 96 games last season and ended in last place.
This year, they won the division and will win the World Series.
Lou is the reason.

If that's not enough, Here's his stats...

Good choice leaving out the years with the Devil Rays. Though that would weaken the argument that he seems to just be at the right place at the right time.

I think he needs to get tossed from a game then return to the dugout in a disguise of sunglasses and a fake moustache painted on with eye-black to be considered "Great." Bobby V. ftw.

It's a bit of both. A great coach gets offered great choices. And Sweet Lou is a great coach.

Lou is a good Manager; he seems to excel at motivation - but as one of best managers in recent history is stretching the issue.

Yeah he should.
I'm sure that he took this job because of the money and thinking he had a pretty good team to work with.
He does know baseball that's for sure.

I like his somewhat mellow demeanor now as well.
