male
I'm not certain why either. For example, in SF/fantasy novels, I generally don't select something from the Acorna series, for example, but do read the Adept series. I've always selected novels mostly with male protagonists, not that I don't think a female lead works as well. One main thing is that, in SF/fantasy/horror, I want to go for escapism. I can't really have that with a lead female. Also, if the interepretation is off, that can be irritating, and I end up disliking the main character.
When I write stories, I nearly always select male characters to write about.
When I worked at Waldens (now Waldenbooks), our biggest fans of historical romance novels were the guys, especially men from middle age onward. Maybe that was their escapism.

I am female, so I prefer to write a female main character because I can "understand" her perspective. But it actually depends on how the character is written. There are many character examples for both female and male main characters. As long as the writer knows how to depict them good, any gendered main role is okay.
