Mix a tablespoon of table salt with hot water (as hot as you can stand it) and gargle the solution every 2-3 hours. It works, but you really should see a doctor to make sure you don't have strep throat.

1.For coating and soothing irritated or inflamed mucous membranes add 1 tablespoon of dried slippery elm per cup of hot water. Alternatively, mix 1 tablespoon of liquid extract in 8 ounces of hot water and drink up to 3 cups daily. Slippery elm lozenges are also available.
2.The old adage of drinking plenty of fluids, restricting food intake and getting plenty of rest often helps the immune system overcome a sore throat.
3.Avoid spicy foods or acidic foods such as orange juice.
4. Zinc lozenges have been found to be effective when locally applied to an inflamed throat. Lower dosages of zinc (10mg) with more frequent application are best, and may help avoid any nausea which might result from higher doses.
5. Preventive measure - Gargling with very warm salt water hourly can ease the pain and reduce the duration of a sore throat. Sometimes it works so well that people forget to continue gargling after the first couple of times and the sore throat returns. Use at least 1/2 teaspoon salt per cup of water. The water should be no hotter than your immersed finger is able to tolerate.

This isn't the best tasting, but if you gargle with peroxide and water (1 part Peroxide, 3 parts water) It helps me tremendously with killing off bacteria whether a sore throat or bleeding gums.

I've always liked hot tea. It seems to help even though it sounds like it shouldn't. If you are having some phlegmy mucous stuff going on, avoid dairy. Dairy just makes the stuff denser.

my mom used to pour honey into a shallow dish and squeeze lemon over it.. then, I'd dip a finger into the mixture and lick it off my finger.. the lemon soothes your throat and the honey makes the lemon pleasant. the finger licking it important (but I guess you can use a spoon) because it a slow application

Hot tea with agave nectar (or honey).
Hot soup might work too.
Try having warm liquids. That usually works. If you have some hard candy around, sucking on that might work as well.

Hot tea followed by ice cream. Drink the tea as hot as you can stand it (don't burn yourself, of course).
There is an "Old Wives' Tale" that recommends gargling with salt water, but it never worked for me. Maybe it would work for you.
