It was one of the most outstanding acts of the American colonists against King George of England.

I have the wonderful experience of teaching international students. One question that they ask me is why the coffee in the United States is so weak... they are used to the European style strong and delicious coffee. I answer with the truth, "It is really supposed to be tea."

Back in 1775, the American colonists were not happy with their situation.
They were taxed highly, and they made money for the British Empire, supplying for example, cotton, tobacco, sugar, etc. But there was a point at which the American colonists united and felt used. One day, some men dressed up as Indians and threw the tea that was docked on boats in Boston into the ocean. This was the Boston Tea Party. From some accounts, the sea got black from the tea. The American colonists had enough of the many taxes and abuses.

What took place of the tea was coffee- easily traded from places where it grew best, such as Mexico, Guatemala and South America. The coffee was made equally as the tea... with a lot of water, even milk and sugar if it was available, much like the English tea. Keep in mind that tea was a cultural thing for these colonists, something they drank on social occasions, to start their day and to relax. But the American colonists united and made Americans coffee drinkers. At that time, coffee was much less expensive and separated the colonies from King George and his taxes. This union surprised England (and the tea suppliers).
But King George still did not take the colonists seriously and lost the American revolution.

And this is why we have watery coffee here in America. It was originally a substitute for tea.

Hope this helps
Ken

you mean significance...

Well have your heard that song, "We're not going to take it" by Twisted sister? It is like that. The Boston Tea party was the catalyst that put the colonies on the road to emancipating themselves from England. They were tired of paying taxes to a country that was oceans away. Later on we have the all to famous "Declaration of Independence".

The colonists, masquerading as "Indians", smashed the boxes and dumped the tea into the sea (which is why coffee is the main hot drink in the States), telling the Brits "We have had enough; quit raising taxes and telling us what to import and what prices we must pay".

if a group of people were protesting in front of a Washington landmark and U.S Marines opened fire on the crowd and killed 5, no one would be saying "they only killed 5 people". There would be big trouble.
