I think he moved smoothly between sophisticated charmer at a banco table to sleek panther as he moved around in the badguy's stronghold to gentle lover to someone stricken by the death of those along the way, whether a fellow agent or someone he had crossed paths with. He truly is multifaceted in this role. There are vulnerable moments, such as when the sexy enemy agent criticizes him as a lover and Bond snaps back at her; when Goldfinger has him pinned down, with the laser coming closer and closer; or when the tarantula is crawling on him. (Actually, Connery was so terrified of the spider that you can clearly see that his arm is pressed against glass, making it look as if the creature is on him. I hear the other spider-on-skin shots were a stand-in.) When Bond was in danger, Connery could make us believe that he was having panicky moments. I especially think of a wounded Bond in trying to hide in a parade, with the wicked redhead and her henchmen on his trail. Also, Connery could deliver the jokey lines with a wryness no one else quite captured.
He's handsome, athletic, moves beautifully and has a fabulous voice! AND, he has a wonderful singing voice ("Dr. No" but also in "Darby O'Gill & The Little People")!

Sean Connery, hands down! Pierce Brosnan was a "pretty-boy" version of Bond.
