I had a urine test done to test for diabetes and it came back tht there was +1 bacteria in my urine. My doctor said normally urine doesnt have bacteria, but it can have a little and it was nothing to worry about. However I am paranoid and wondering for thiose who know what +1 bacteria means, is that a lot and does urine typically have some bacteria? If it was something serious would it have a lot more bacteria in it?

Having a urinalysis with 1+ bacteria is unremarkable if the specimen was taken in a cup. If the specimen was a from a catheterization, the bacteria represents and infection.

Bacteria is common in urine, in higher amounts it can lead to an infection.

It's a small amount. A +3 would usually be the largest measured by a dipstick test. However, your urine should not have bacteria in it. Such a small amount may indicate that your sample was contaminated(i.e., you didn't do a true "clean catch" by not wiping properly or allowing the cup to touch your body, the specimen came in contact with something at the lab, etc.). To be safe, have your doctor do a urine culture to see if there is truly bacteria present and what type. If there is bacteria he will prescribe an antibiotic. Don't let it get out of control, Urinary Tract Infections can wreak havoc on your system.

I have to do urine tests every three months for kidney problems, and had the problem with the bacteria also, until my nephrologist told me the correct way for a woman to collect a urine specimen. You should wash yourself, and catch the urine midstream, without touching the specimen collection bottle to your skin, as you can contaminate the sample by touching it to your labia. I follow those directions, and have had good results since then. Good luck!

1+ bacteria is a very low grade infection, and if you drink enough water, your body will flush it out and there will be no problems. 2 liters a day will usually turn the trick. An infection that is symptomatic and requires treatment involves 3 to 4+ bacteria counts.

meaning an outside contaminant- or maybe bacteria- having your urine contaminated has no bearing on your pregnancy- unless you have an STD which your MD would have seen upon your physical exam which he probably did at your appointment- you are stressing for nothing, some lab results are altered by outside contaminants that get in the cup
