The Valves, each chamber has valves which block the blood from going retrograde. The right side of the heart has two chambers the Atrium and Ventricle, communicated by the tricuspid valve and then it sends the blood to the lungs via the pulmonary valve. The left side has an atrium and a ventricle too ,communicated by the mitral valve and later the blood goes to systemic circuit via the aortic valve.

The valves are one-way, shutting after the blood passes them from any back-pressure. If they don't this is called regurgitation and can be serious.
