cataclysmic asteroid or comet impact
the crater is in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico
evidence is the iridium layer in geological deposits from 65 million years ago
a nuclear winter type climate would have resulted in world-wide devastation besides the explosive impact itself
either that or they all started smoking (old Far Side cartoon)

Though most believe a single cataclysmic event resulted in the dinosaurs losing popularity and eventually falling completely out of vogue (at least in youth culture) you must remember that it was 60 million years ago. We've only been around for about 150 thousand years just a little longer than when I first roamed the earth leaving a trail of destruction in my wake. So they could have just slowly faded away in all that time or evolved into chickens, the Bush administration and other poopoovores.
Now as far as the extinction of other organisms and I assume you mean female organisms because there's certainly no shortage of guys busting there acorns, it is not extinct its just that most men don't give a hoot nor could they do that for a woman even if the wanted to. Often graduating from the University of GIM/ME with a degree in Porcine Insensitivity, men as a rule have forgotten the fine art of mastering the female organism. If the trend continues, someday all men will have reverted back to their original neanderthalic state and look like Icy Gazpacho.

There is some evidence to suggest that they were on the way out and that they lasted for awhile afterwords. But so far, the comet(s) are probably the most likely.
