I hate to call anyone stupid but this person received three 4-year scholarships to out-of-state universities but he turned them down. Now he is taking classes online. Keep in mind he is 18 years old.
If he was my son, I would force him to accept one of the scholarships and send him packing. I'm sure he would thank me in the long run. How is he going to learn social skills and enjoy the campus life-style if he stays home and take ALL of his classes online??

Kathryn R: Its people like you that really proves why today's children are so screwed up. Kids, and even though he is 18 he is still a kid, do not know what is best for them. Its up to the parents to make that decision. There is no reason why an 18 year old should turn down four scholarships and stay at home and play X-box while taking classes online. It stupid. Plain stupid! And any parent that would allow their child to do this is stupid too....

Perhaps he doesn't want to leave the safety and security of home. That's the only reason I can really think of, unless he's just down right lazy. Personally, I think it's a very foolish decision. He's wasting a wonderful opportunity.
I've noticed a trend lately of more and more adult children staying home with their parents, rather than moving out of the nest. I can remember when we couldn't wait to turn 18 and get out of the house and on our own. Now it seems like the kids know they have it made at home, with free meals, laundry, no rent, actually no responsibilities at all. If they move away from home to go to school, they've got to take care of themselves, and today's teens are used to being taken care of.
Still can't get over someone turning down a four year scholarship for online classes. That's really a shocker. Perhaps there's some underlying reason you're not aware of. Girlfriend maybe?

There could be a whole number of reasons.
Scholarships don't, generally, pay for everything, and money is still necessary to cover certain elements. Perhaps, he feels it's something he cannot afford.
Perhaps, he wants to gain real world work experience, while working on a degree.
Perhaps, he feels that the college campus experience is just one he does not want to cope with.
College life can be a wonderful experience, but it is not for everyone. Forcing someone to do something against their will, is a sure fire route to disaster.

If he was you son you couldn't force him to do anything at 18. Maybe he doesn't want to go to a school where he has to answer to their schedule maybe he wants to make his own so that he can work on his designs. If he comes up with a design while in school and becomes a millionaire you wont think that he's so stupid than!!! Some people aren't made for college and this way he can get the college that he needs while he meets his emotional needs. IF he goes to a Brick and mortar school and hates it and leaves he loses the scholarship anyway so why even waste it when it could go to a student who really needs it. At the age of 18 it isn't the parents choice of schools they have to trust that their children know what they want and need. The parent does not have to go to the school. Did you know that more freshmen commit suicide than any other age group in the adolescent population?? I know because I have a sister who was a dean at one of the most prestigious college for women in the states Barnard college. She's also a social worker who works with adolecents and she knows that most freshmen who don't want to be where they are if they don't feel that they can talk to thier parents kill themselves. It the situation worth his life???

lack of time... not wanting to be away from home. Maybe he just thinks he would not do well in that environment, with the parties and everything, or be able to keep up to the pressures and standards of the scholarship my friend got one and had to keep her grades to a certain point and though she was doing well she couldn't keep them up to that grade and lost the scholarship, maybe he doesn't want that to happen and to disappoint his parents.

I'm with you on this one! This sounds crazy to me but theres always the chance that hes afraid of something. maybe the whole college thing has him feeling intimidated...he is definitely afraid of somethig if hes choosing a damn computer over the whole college experience, it could be to much change all at once for him but it makes him sound like an introvert.

Hey, if that's what the kid wants to do, let him do it. If he's smart enough to acquire 3 scholarships.. i'm pretty sure he'll do well with his online schooling.

some people feel safer when they don't have to deal with people
I used to be like that
am kind of becoming more like that lately
went drinking last night, said maybe 100 words the whole evening, no interpersonal conversations
enough was going on in my own mind to entertain myself

He's lazy and scared. He can only take so many classes online before he'll be forced to actually go to school (if that's what he chooses to keep doing). 18 yr old high school graduates don't quite understand the value of 4 years free education.

He's either incredibly co-dependent on his homelife and family, or he didn't actually get any scholarships, would be my guess.
