No.
All that such a policy would accomplish is requiring all government documentation and business to be conducted and written in English only and explicitly restrict translations of such material into other languages by government bodies. This policy will do nothing to encourage immigrants to learn English and will further marginalize those who speak little or no English.
There are already publicly-funded and private programs that help people learn basic English. No one can learn an entirely new language overnight. Some people just can't grasp reality.

Yes we do...Tax greenbacks move to instructing scholars English...A waste of cash. You must instruct your youngsters English at dwelling. There's not anything mistaken with having a couple of language, and sure we're established on every person's tradition however the founding fathers spoke English. Other nations have a couple of language however nonetheless have an professional language.

Yes.
English is a language that is known across the world. It - and the last time I checked Mandarin Chinese - must be understood and spoken fluently in order to get anywhere in business circles. English is a compulsory class in high school. The majority of America itself, the civilized world, and even immigrants from Mexico - speak English.
The productivity and collective intelligence of this country can't be risked on people who refuse to assimilate.
When the telephone message says "Press one" in Spanish, what are you going to press? The numbers on your phone are written in English and the English alphabet is all over them.
The only real "Con" I can think of is that the diversity advocates on the hard left will be pissed off ... I don't care.
@phishpis... : I seriously doubt an overhaul of US educational curriculum (which is already full of foreign languages) would fly.

Even GOD used different languages to disrupt an activity. In families that speak the same language there are still times when communications breaks down why should the government put in another hurtle to people communicating directly with their neighbor? The country should have an Official Language! Airline pilot already do.
By the way did the Spanish change the language of the local people to their language? They also saw the advantage to have 1 language for their empire.
This doesn't say there isn't a good reason to know more than 1 language.

What exactly does making english the official language do. All it means is that the Gov. must make its documents available in English.
It does not prevent services in other languages.
However the promoters of the official languages act want to make english the only allowed language in the USA.
This is a very different proposition.
It is similar to the Language laws of Quebec where the Language Police issue fines for having english words on signs. The law effectively prohibits other languages on business signs etc but they only seem to enforce it against the English.
The proposed official language legislation is nothing more than disguised racism.
It makes me wonder why economically rich white people are so terrified of economically poor minority people

In my book it already is. So why not make it official. We already know that inorder to graduate any sort of schooling in the US you need to learn engilsh to make any sort of comfortable living you need to learn the language. What I do not want to see this become is a way to enforce a closeminded society. One of the good things about many of our professions in the US is we give preference to those who not only speak English but can speak a multitude of other languages too, knowing that it is a good way to help those who are trying to transition from the old country to the US. This also shouldn't mean that stores and many documents can not have translations for mulitiple language people, but for puroposes of official government business, I do not see a problem with having English being officially declared the offical language?

Yes. This was primarily founded as an English-Speaking country. It's ridiculous for legal immigrants to demand any other.
And just so you know- English was NOT my first language, so this is not a biased answer.

Not until after the elections. It should be. Instead of having pamphlets printed in many languages, the government should pay translators to translate for them and perhaps to teach them english. Create jobs while doing the right thing.

Every country I know of has its own official language, whether or not the majority of its citizens speak that language.
