ALL kids want to be doctors when they are in elementary school. Don't force them--they most likely will change their minds as they get older. They should learn basic grammar, history, math, etc in elementary school.

What they want now may be totally different in a few years. Just teach them good study habits and hope that they learn the value of an education and the fun in learning new things. Make sure that they are well rounded by encouraging out of school activities such as sports, scouts, volunteering etc. If they are good students they will get into the college that they want and they can be whatever their hearts desire.

Just let them be kids! Elementary school is really just the basics that we all need to get by in life. Study with your children and be active in their pursuits, what ever they may end up being! THAT IS WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW!
When I was in elementary school I wanted to be an artist. My family tried to discourage me in every way possible. Even saying later on I could not attend art school as a college choice. So I became an accountant. This was their career choice for me, due to the fact that I excelled in math. For a while I worked as an accountant once I finished college.. Then they saw how unhappy I was. So I became a nurse. For a while.
I finally became a commercial artist without the schooling and am the most happy that I've ever been.
Moral of this story is....Support whatever your children decide to become! It will make them become happier adults in life!

While the kids are in elementary school, they may still be very serious about their occupations. I would look into a few areas.
1. Latin. This is the basis of the terminiology for both law and medicine.
2. Both require good people skills. Keep them involved in social groups or activities.
3. Both require thinking out side the box. Enroll them in summer courses such as Kids University, Science Center programs etc. Also a good kids drama program will help with interactions between other people.

First of all, they can't choose what to study in elementary school. Their curriculum is pretty much set in stone, and the only thing they can choose is things like what state to do a report on.
Second, kids that age almost always will change their mind several times about what they want to do with life. At that age I wanted to write children's books. Now I have a biochemistry degree.
Finally, give them the opportunities to pursue their interests, but don't force anything on them. Take them to the library and let them read about whatever. Get them age appropriate books about medicine or law, but also let them read whatever they want. See if they want to do unrelated activities, like sports or music. Right now, they should be having fun and not worrying about college until they are in high school.

In ES i didn't think they gave kids a chance to choose what courses they wanted? Not in my area anyways. In HS though the lawyer child should take a journalism class, and/or debate, and/or, speech, and/or, tons of English classes. Those are what our school recommends. For the Doctor. Take Latin classes (most of the terms used in the medical field have something to do with Latin root words.). For both take as many language classes as you can focusing on Spanish and other popular languages. That's about as all as i can give you. Hope that helped in some way.

It is too early for them to get involved in studying anything specific in elementary school. They should attempt to do their best in every subject. One child may be more interested in history and government, the other in science.
They both need a broad base of knowledge even if they go into a specific profession.

For the doctor: take him to see a real live surgery. Then let him ride around with some paramedics for a day. If he's not freaked out, then that may be his calling.
For the lawyer: make him sit through a few divorce trials.

The school pretty determines what they will study and how much time per day is being used for each subject. Make sure they do well in English and math. If you don't think there is enough time being devoted to history and science, you should supplement these with trips to related sites in your area, reading, educational TV, and DVD or VHS. Encourage them to do projects in these areas.

Children at this age often change their minds about what they want to be. I wouldn't take it too seriously at this time besides children study what is offered at this age. To get into colleges they only look at the Highschool years and nothing else grade wise or class wise. I suggest when they do get to Highschool to take College prep courses.
