Austria (Europe)
Primary school (6-10 years old, 4 grades):
Grade one and two: 22 units (50 min.) per week
Grade three and four: 23 units per week
Schools can vary this a little but the total has to be 90 units per week over 4 years.

Secondary school (grades 5 - 8:
grade 5: 27 or 28 units (depending on schooltype)
grade 6: 31 or 30 units
grade 6 and 8: 31 units
makes 120 units per week over 4 years

Secondary school grades 9-12:
Grade 9: 31 units
Grade 10: 29 units
Grade 11: 31 units
grade 12: 33 units
makes 124 units per weeks in 4 years
plus a total of 6 units per week in chosen subjects between grade 10 and grade 12
totals to 130 units per week in 4 years

Engineering schools (grades 9-13 (five years))
approx 185 units over 5 years - include quite a lot of practical work.

School is Mon.-Fri.
THe school system is free although private schools exist as well. Books are free as well as is transportation to/from school.
Day care (lunch, afternoon) and is not provided by all schools and has to be paid for. There are day care places run by the communities especially in larger towns where children do their homework and are looked after.

It depends on whether you mean Austria or Australia.

I don't know for sure about Austria, but I know that in Germany kids (used to) go to school in the morning only - also on Saturday. Maybe 8-12 or 8-1 for 6 days.

In Australia, by comparison, MOST kids go to school in a regular 9-3:30 type of day, Monday to Friday. It changes a bit depending on whether the school is public or private. Only a very small percentage are taught at home using "school of the air" or other distance learning mechanisms. Despite popular opinion, most Australians live in quite normal cities and towns!

Well ! In Australia most of the children study at home with the help of their parents or special teachers together with the instructions broad casted on Australian radio.
