There's a restaurant 70 miles from Flagstaff Arizona where I look out the window and view a canyon that's Grand while I Gorge on cuisine that's fit for a Royal .

They are almost synonyms.

A gorge is always a canyon, but a canyon isn't always a gorge. They both have steep walls, but a gorge normally has rocky walls that are unclimbable.

I'm sure you can find exceptions. If you want to say they are *completely* synonymous, you'll find plenty of people who agree with you.

The first is Grand and the second is Royal.
