I had a cousin born at 1lb 8ounces... she started sitting at a year, walking at 20 months...
they tend to be at least at the age they were supposed to have been, sometimes because if their fragility a little further behing... most catch up in the preschool years.... I wouldn't worry yet.

I have 3 premature babies. How early was he? What kind of health problems besides low birth weight did he have at the time of birth? Did your sister have any issues? These are all huge factors in prematurity.
What does his nenatolgist say?
In my case my son was born 13 weeks early. He was 3 lbs. They did not expect him to be over 2 but he was. He is now 2 years 8 months. He was behind for his age but for his "adjusted age" which is the age he should be he is right on track.
However, he had no major issues at birth.
They say that by school age which is the age of 5 they are all "caught up". You have to realize these little miracles faught to stay alive. Their little bodies had to work twice a hard. Give him sometime the premature ones ALWAYS end up being the bigest and toughest and the best fighters since they had to do it from the start!
God bless!

My son was born very prematurely and did not sit unsupported until he was 18 months and did not walk until he was 2. He weighed about 18 pounds at 1 year of age also. Hopefully he is getting all of the therapy he needs right now (P.T., O.T., speech). Therapy is what will help most. My son got all of those from the day he came home from the hospital. He is 7 now, and in 2nd grade just like other kids his age. He is still behind in some areas, but is making progress every day.

my twins were 7 weeks premature, weighed 3.14 and 4.5 at birth, so way bigger than your nephew. As long as he is continuing to make progress, getting bigger slowly but surely, try not to worry so much. Ensure that he gets excellent medical care. You won't know the long term effects of his prematurity for several years to come. My twins have no lasting effects. Best wishes

I have a daughter who was 9 weeks early and she is exactly 2 months behind on everything she has done, but all of the doctors told me that it was expected. If you and his parents are really worried about him, call the doctor, thats what they are there for, I probably call mine way to much, but that is why I pay him so much money.

his parents should have been told where to get help for him. easter seals is a good place to start. they can contact them to get some answers.
it's very common for a premie to be behind developmentaly.don't be alarmed. he may never be on target but he and his folks can get help to give him a start. many school districts also offer specialized screening from people educated in special education. i have a couple friends that do it.
