In downtown San Antonio many people will steer you towards the Riverwalk, but most people from San Antonio will tell you that the food is usually not the best there as they will get the crowds regardless of the quality of the food, as that is where the tourism is focused. Exceptions to that rule are Boudro's, Biga on the Banks, Ascenar and Las Canarias.

Otherwise in the downtown area,

for steaks:
Bohanon's or Ruth's Chris's

Mexican
Rosario's in Southtown

Italian:
La Foccacia in Southtown

Oriental:
Thai Kitchen on the River

Burgers:
Chris Madrid's

Late night:
Mi Tierra @ El Mercado

Downtown San Antonio I would say eat at Rosario's or Tito's for Mexican food and for a very unusual priviledged breakfast, eat at Madhatter's or Pioneer Mill. You have to eat on the riverwalk at least once. If you have children, I'd say Joe's Crab Shak, it's family friendly or Hard Rock Cafe. Riverwalk food is pricy though. Tito's is a very reasonable family run restaurant.

***** on the river walk. The wait staff is rude on purpose, hence the name. But the service is great. If you have a sense of humor, this place is a nice American food place to check out.
