Yes they can.

Though you'll have a hard time predicting when exactly they'll fail. Expect the battery to be useless though (Li-Ion batteries only last a few years) and not worth replacing (because they age whether they are used or not and so new old stock will be almost as bad as a used battery).

As for buying the cheapest adapter, that is likely to make the computer more likely to break down (if what you buy is sufficiently dodgy). Something from the manufacturer or recommended by them would be your best bet (though one has to wonder why your friend doesn't have the adapter).

Technically yes. All electronic equipment will eventually fail and need to be replaced. It mainly depends on what the machine has been used for, and how well it has been kept. Obviously if all the laptop has been used for is internet and word processing, the internal components would last far longer than say a highly demanding game...

As for the charger, here in the UKyou can get replacements from as little as £20, but branded (eg Dell) are more expensive.

A Gateway, you would have to give me the laptop and the $250.00 the charger can go from $25- $50 I don't think that is a good deal, I have worked on Gateway before and I don't care to much for them I think there junk unless you have a boat that needs an anchor. good luck

It is true that computers naturally degrade the older they become, the first things to go are #1 the screen, the larger the monitor the faster it goes, #2 the hard rive, #3 the CPU. There are better deals on new laptops, I would consider Tiger Direct.com, there pretty good on low prices, I wouldn't buy any laptop over 2 years old.
