"I went to the club, and everyone waited for hours....I got right in..cause you know, I know Diddy and he's got pull there." That is name dropping. Using the name of famous or important people casually in conversation in a way to impress others.

It never impresses me.

The act of inserting the name of any obscure cultural institution into a conversation in an effort to accelerate the building of rapport with someone, or to make one's self appear to be more important. Typically considered by intelligent people to be a negative habit.


mentioning someone (usually 'famous') in a conversation to imply that you are best friends with said person in lame hope of appearing cool by association

Mentioning the names of popular or famous people in a conversation, thereby implying that you know them, and that you are good friends with them.

An indirect way of bragging about who you know.

it can mean 2 thing. one is you forget the name of someone and call them another name. but the more common defintion is when someone names people to sound more cool. as in, I went to a club and _____ was there and he totaly looked at me!! (just to look more cool)
