My breastfed baby is backed up. She is frantic, now that it's night and the doctor's office closed. That seems to be how it works with young ones, they aren't "sick" until "after-hours". Anyway, of course I know, breastfed babies can go days without a bowel movement. But, what can I do to help her through the pain she's in? And of course, I'll be calling her DR. tomorrow morning when his office is open. Please experienced parents of breastfed babies. Thank you in advance. :)

It is NORMAL for a breastfed baby to go longer than a week without a movement.

My estimation is that the screaming/crying are unrelated to bowel movements.

It is extremely rare for a breastfed baby to be constipated. Constipation doesn't have to do when how often the baby goes, it has to do with what the stool looks like when the baby goes. Is the stool soft, mushy or liquidy? Then the baby is NOT constipated. If the baby has stool that is hard, like pellets or adult poop, then the baby is constipated. If she is exclusively breastfed and has hard poop, she's either not eating enough, she's sensitive to something in your diet (like dairy, or something acidic) or has a medical condition.

I know this because my breastfed babies often went a week or more without having a movement. It's NORMAL and NATURAL, so don't EVER give them a suppository like some of the other answers have suggested.

If she's screaming and crying she might be sick. That she has a bug, or a little infection is far more likely than because she's backed up. Is her belly hard? Is she drawing up her legs in pain? It's more likely that she has an ear infection, or is just feeling unwell.

My son started fighting his sleep at around 2 or 3 months so its normal for a 7 week old to do that. Yes she can be spoiled but only if you hold her all the time. If you are only holding her to put her to sleep and awake times to play then its not going to spoil her. Have you tried a pacifier or swing? A 7 week old cant self soothe so no you shouldnt let her cry unless you get too stressed out. Then walk out of the room and go back in after a minute to calm yourself down.

This happened with my own, 28 yrs ago, and my grandson last year. Lay your little darling in a warm bath, and rub her tummy gently, then lay her on your chest upright to let gravity work...The warmth may help relax her muscles and the rubbing may help her digestion work naturally. It may take 2 or 3 baths in one evening, but it usually helps. It would also be kind to put some balmex/vaseline on the immediate outside of the area so when she does go it doesn't hurt so much.
Also, she may have gas buildup from being constipated. If you have or can get some gas drops, they'll help that...

Breastfed babies that are receiving nothing but breast milk hardly ever get constipated. Are you sure that she is getting enough milk? Maybe she is not backed up but starving. This baby needs to go to the doctors NOW. Take her to the Emergency Room, better safe than sorry.

i gave my son a little bit of apple juice. an ounce of apple juice and n ounce or water. i watered i down so it wouldnt be so strong. and my son had bowel movement earlier the next morning. my son went just as long without a bowel movement so i tried that and it worked he was only like 9 weeks so.. it was a holiday weekend for me. i know they say dont give your baby any juice til 6 months but it didnt hurt my child. good luck. if she seems constipated and you dont want to try that push her knees up to her belly and kinda like massage her lower belly. it eases the pain and sometimes helps pass a bowel.

Call the doctors office, they must have an on call doctor who handles after hours issues. If they don't call the ER or take your baby their.

Good luck!

i dont have a 14 month old.....my baby is 8 months. i babysat for years before i had my own and from experience constipation can be very painful. have her sit in a warm bath and play with her.. she might go afterwards or in the bath... being in the water makes it less painful. you can also lay her down on her back and do the bycicle movment with her legs... if this doesnt work you should call your doctor.

It's not normal for anyone to go for a week between doos - and if she hasn't done since Thursday 27th, no wonder she's in pain.
Usual answer - give her a baby size glycerin suppository. Note: you don't hold it in place, just lube her anus and push it in as far as it'll go. Guarantee it'll make her do a smelly in 20 minutes or less!

first of all you should get a doctor that has someone on call 24 hours a day. second i had that problem with my son and the doctor told me to give him a baby supository they sell them at any pharmacy its a childrens supository and you put vasaline on it and hold it in her butt i know it sounds mean but within 10 min he went to the bathroom.

If you cant get to the store or there isn't one open in the old days they used to put vasailine on a rectal themometer and put it up their to help stimulate her. I hope that helped!
