Maybe Sling Blade:
Sling Blade is a 1996 film drama set in rural Arkansas. It tells the fictional story of a simple man named Karl Childers who is released from a psychiatric hospital where he has lived since murdering his mother and her lover at age 12. He befriends a young boy (Frank), begins a friendship with the boy's mother (Linda) and must confront the mother's abusive boyfriend (Dole), as well as his own dark past.
Both movies deal with a murder committed by a man that is mentally challenged. Both take place during the Depression years or shortly thereafter. Both men are looking for a better way of life but that is cut short by an act of violence. Both men are not bad people. In Sling Blade, despite all Karl's efforts to be the good man that he should be and follow the Bible, he ends up killing Doyle to save his new friend and his mother Linda. Lenny, despite his promise to be gentle and good, accidently kills Curley's wife. Curley, the boss's son is a young man who is aggressive, short-tempered and a bully towards Lennie once they first meet. Doyle is that way with Karl, the boy, and Linda.

Common themes:
The theme of loneliness is manifested many times in the work, Of Mice and Men, and is often the dominant theme. This theme occurs during many circumstances but is not present from start to finish. There are many themes that are present most of the way through such as sacrifice, friendship and comradship. However, there is only one theme that is present from beginning to end, and this theme is the pursuit of dreams.

In Sling Blade, there is also the theme of loneliness, i.e, with all three of the main characters Karl, Frank and Linda.
There is also sacrifice, friendship, and comradship. Karl sacrifices his new-found freedom in order to save the boy and his mother from years of future abuse by Doyle. Lonely Linda sacrifices a lot when she settles for being with Doyle. Also, Karl and Frank become good friends and comrads--just like Lenny and George. As mentioned above, Karl had hopes (dreams) of being non-institutionalized.

I fly under the radar around here, so I'm happy to say that I feel under-appreciated. I guess the economy has hit Yahoo points, too, huh?

The closest movie I can think of that comes to mind is 'The Outsiders' or 'Rainman', in their own respective ways. :-)
