"San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" is a song, written by John Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas, and sung by Scott McKenzie. It was released in 1967 (the so-called "Summer of Love") and became a cultural icon.

McKenzie's song, penned by Phillips to promote the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, became an instant hit, and became the anthem of the "hippie" era. The song's lyrics tell the listeners, "If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair". The song reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S., and was number one in the UK and most of Europe. The single is purported to have sold over 5 million copies worldwide. The song is credited with bringing thousands of young people to San Francisco, California during the late 1960s.

The song was extensively used by Led Zeppelin in their live performances, during their seminal Dazed and Confused era.

"...For those who come to San Francisco...
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair!
If you come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there..."

That was a one hit wonder guy in the 60s. Scott McKenzie.
It was produced by Papa John Philips of the Mamas and the Papas, and that's how it got its hit sound. Philips wrote it.
San Francisco was a hippie haven in the early and mid 60s, as were most major American cities including NY, because there were lots of cheap rents, believe it or not. Cheap rents would be hard to find today! That's why you don't have the hippy culture there anymore.
Hippies are free spirits who don't have responsible establishment jobs. They are not materialistic.
Bohemian culture can only exist where it is affordable.

I can't remember, but I think it may have been the Mamas and the Papas ... I know they did it on a 'CD' we bought of 'the best' of them, anyway. Yes, I do remember WHEN IT WAS FIRST SUNG ... and yes, I did 'go to San Francisco' and I did 'wear flowers in my hair.' I'm now 57, and a retired psychologist ... and I'm still a 'hippie' sometimes, too, at least as far as 'dressing' goes!
