You get what you pay for. Desktops are really cheap nowadays. I would go with a major trusted brand like Sony. Dells are cheap but they are really crap. I own both and my Sony is so much better, I've never had problems, unlike my dell.

Hi, u can get some pretty decent computers for under $1000. If u play a lot of music and do some stuff with photos. Then get any nice decent computer for that price. You could get a Windows Vista pc for that price withput any problems, however if u want to improve the hardware a bit then why not use Linux and since its free and improve ur hardware specs a bit more. If u choose Windows then make sure its Windows Vista, since Windows Vista's new security features resemble the Linux kernel. U could still try Linux if u want since u don't play games I guess. Here is what I think u could get for ur price:
intel core dual 2.0 ghz
2gb ram
at least 80gb hard disk
dvd-rw
built in sound and lan card
256 to 512 mb vga card
mouse
keyboard
webcam
monitor of course
The computer will run Windows Vista without any problems.
Good Luck and take care!

alienware. joke.

try HP erm...

maybe a 20" monitor
2GB Kingston (or not) RAM
250GB hard drive
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Live 2.0ghz or more
erm...Altec Lansing Surround Speakers
Windows XP Media Center (recommended) but surely not Vista! (because I find Vista soooo annoying)
erm, maybe a Nvidia 6600 PCI-Express 256mb will do.

or try a Mac, because you said you like photos and music. but i dont think they have something under a thousand bucks. lol.

if you're mostly music and photos

and under $1,000.00 I would really consider saving up a little more and getting a imac

entry imac is $1,199.00 and is worth every penny, its a little over what you wanted to spend but, you won't be let down
