Found this fine answer elsewhere:
It is uncertain. Sailors are often credited as the source since they have long called their shifts of duty tricks but card players & especially hos & pimps have also been suggested as the expression appears to be 20th century American English I never heard any of my shipmates call a "shift of duty" anything but a "watch." My Great GrandPappy Zebadiah Chandler always told me that "Trix" was a Latin suffix used to form feminine nouns and adjectives. He added that it was often used in the English language for the same purpose (i.e., executrix, dominatrix). American slang uses the suffix to denote an attractive single female (trixie) or to refer to the wife of a close friend (How's Trix?).

Well yes it is a way of saying whats up or how's life. Tricks derives from "turning tricks" referring to prostitutes. But nobody is calling you a prostitute, its just slang. The above answers were good, but I just wanted to give you insight into the "tricks" part.

RE:

In general, it's the same as saying, how are you - is your life going o.k ? How are your wife and kids - etc. So in effect,
the person is saying - I hope you're o.k. & I hope your life is
fine, if all this is true - then the reply should be -" great yeah"
If all is not well, then the reply is," well you know how it is"?
Or C'est la vie. ( Such is Life). Hope this makes sense, my
friends always used this expression - in our teens, back then
all our circle understood it. Now the general term in G.B.
seems to be " All Right"? and replies vary in answer to this.
