I just moved into an apartment and the previous owners didnt take care of their linoleum floor in the kitchen. It's textured and it accumulated dirt and grim that look like black specks in the ridges. I am desperate to clean it all up but I don't want to use heavy chemicals like bleach to take it out along with the gloss of the linoleum.

I have been mopping with Borax and water. Borax is a great natural alternative to bleach. Just add 1/2 cup to a bucket of warm water. It leaves a nice, fresh scent (no toxic fumes!) and a great shine.

Or you can use vinegar and water. Mop with 1 cup white vinegar in 2 gallons water. The vinegar smell dissipates as it dries.

You might want to invest in a Hoover FloorMate. A bit expensive, but will do all the dirty work for you and your floors will be so clean. You do need to use the liquid cleaner that comes with the FloorMate or you might damege the unit. I have "acres" of tile with lots of texture and my house was 5 years old when we moved in. I think the previous owners had never done more than damp mop the floors. My FloorMate took care of the accumulated dirt and grime with one wash and no sore knees or aching back and I never got my hands dirty!

My vinyl floor has been a pain for years, but its in good conditon so I don't replace it. Here is what I do and I'm a senior lady, so you can do it too. Go to the store and buy a bottle of Wax Remover. Get a scrub brush, put on your shorts and get on the hands and knees. Start in the corner. Pour alittle wax remover and scrub it with the brush and let it sit for several minutes, scrub again and wipe it up. My floors come out beautiful. I use Mop n Glo after to bring out the sheen. Its work, but your floor will look and feel great. And my floor is over 25 yrs old.

I use the Mr.Clean Magic Eraser on my linoleum floor. It takes more time to clean your floor this way, but there are no harsh chemicals and it gets the dirt and grime out of the crevasses.

Buy/ borrow a floor steamer. Eureka made one, its bright yellow. I found mine on eBay. The other one is gray and black, don't remember the name but it does not get as hot and does not clean as well.
