a mom's weight gain during pregnancy, and autism? The article below states that women who gain more than the recommended amount of weight during pregnancy have a higher chance of having kids with birth defects. Not sure if it includes autism, but I know several women with autistic children and they have all gained A LOT of weight during their pregnancies...50 or more pounds. Just struck me last night as I was watching TV. I saw an ad with Jenny Mc Carthy doing an ad for Jenny Craig or weight watchers stating that she gained 60 pounds while pregnant and her son is autistic.

No. There are no studies that have provided evidence linking weight gain of the mother and autism.

The article is talking about birth defects only and autism does not fall under that category, so now, there is no research to support the connection.

no, weight doesnt have to do anything with autism... gaining weight during pregnancy is normal, but the age of the mother and the genes of both parents play a great part in it

I am not qualified to answer this, but it is a really interesting question and observation!
There are those in the medical field who profess to know everything, but so many studies are contradictory and our understanding of autism is in its infancy. I would be interested to see if this link is just coincedence or something more!

I dont think that is accurate. My sister-in-law gained 100 pounds during her entire pregnancy and her baby girl came out healthy. She's a little one the skinny side, but that's pretty much about it.
