What would be the effects of an explosion completely tearing away Hoover Dam? How large of an area would be flooded? How many would lose power due to power supply being cut of from this source? What would be all the effects including possible casualties if this ever happened?

It could never happen, the Hoover Dam is way too strong a structure to be destroyed by the kind of attack a terrorist group could carry out.

James M: The question was whether the dam could be brought down by a terrorist attack, not an earthquake.

Hoover Dam would not flood LA it is on the Arizona Nevada Blvd. The main problem if the Hoover Dam collapsed would be the loss of electricity for several western states. The Dam is really in the middle of no where and the water would flow into the Colorado River, no one lives real close to the dam. Lake Meade would empty out too. People in Nevada and Arizona would lose power.

This was one of those things we studied in national geography class.

Since the Hoover Dam supplies about 1/3 the countries electric , It could possibly shut down nearly 1/2 the whole system.
It would probably take a nuclear bomb to tear out the whole dam .
The resulting flood would be secondary to the nuc. If non nuc the flooding could be massive and probably do much flooding and damage to L.A.

Where does the Colorado river drain?

It would cause devastating flooding to some down river towns including Lake Havasu, and Bullhead City AZ, Laughlin NV, and Needles CA. Yuma AZ is far enough down river that it MIGHT be spared devastation due to longer warning time.

Carol W is wrong. There are (I am guessing) about a hundred thousand people living along the river below the dam.

Of course it could happen; nature could cause a rupture, (Earthquake) and the pressure would cause the eventual collapse. The significant question would be could the water be let out to minimize a flood. If a terrorist attack occurred, there would extensive flooding and extensive erosion, but the human impact may not be as severe as you would think. All of the water would eventually finds its way to the Colorado River, so I would not think it would be a high priority on a list.
