There isnt anything wrong with peer pressure, unless your peers are unsavory individuals or are pressuring you into doing something that is bad for you.

Think about it, if your friends like to study, exercise, maintain a healthy diet, etc... then you probably will too, and that will be a good thing. But if your friends like shotting heroin, watching porn until 4 AM while eating KFC... chances are good that they will screw you up.

People maintaining group behavior by non-institutional forms of control (such as peer pressure) is as old as mankind. Saying "just be yourself" is kind of a new sentiment, and it makes no sense considering that humans are apes and apes are social creatures. However, it is entirely up to the individual to decide what groups he/she falls into.

man being a social animal tries to fit into the system. but to do that he has to be coherent with the system, otherwise he would be like an impurity in the system. this urge to identify oneself as a part of the larger picture he adopts the nature, habits and all features of the peers. so it is very natural.
but not everyone give in to it. some people are fiercely independent and have strong character. whether that is good or bad is immaterial in our present discussion but such people cannot give away their identity. Such people never fall prey to peer pressure.

I love peer pressure--It gets me worked into a frenzy to find out what is expected then do something else.

Unfortunately peer pressure is inevitable, and sometimes your peers don't even have to be the ones to pressure you, but people want so badly to fit in that they are willing to compromise their morals and values to fit in with their peers. My motto is STAND BEHIND YOUR PRINCIPLES EVEN IF YOU STAND ALONE!!!!! Be a leader and not a follower. Too many indians and not enough chiefs.

peer pressure is necessary so that individuals can find their place of acceptance. It is a test that requires reaction to action and allows a person to find their own boundaries within themselves.

It exists and that is what keeps groups together. It is strongest when we are younger and as you get older you don't feel the pull of it as strong. It feels good to let go of some of it.
