2a² + 6a=8

2a² + 6a - 8=0

2(a² + 3a - 4) = 0

2(a-1)(a+4) = 0

(a-1)(a+4) = 0

a = 1 a = -4

I believe a=1

2 (1)^2 + 6(1)=8
2(1) + 6(1)=8
2+6=8
