To me the Dark Ages was the worst time for mankind.

We lost so much science and technology and understanding and were locked into that until the Renaissance. If I could change that, maybe by improving Rome or delaying its fall then it would be the difference between us living on Mars and being where we are at now. We were set back several hundreds of years.

Of course if you are looking for a single event that one person could change then it would be to rescue the writings in the Library of Alexandria. If those could have been saved then the time we lost in the Dark Ages could have been made up by not having to reinvent the water clock and millions of other inventions.

Most people are going to answer killing Hitler, but I strongly disagree. WW2 was a necessary horror. It is the single most important event since the discovery of the New World. Because of the use of the atomic bomb on Japan it will never be used by any sane individual or country. Because of the horror of the Holocaust the act of genocide will never be ignored or tolerated; meaning Darfur wouldn't even be on your radar screens. And speaking of radar WW2 was the single greatest spur to our technological development since the Renaissance and not matched until the Space Race.

Societies, just like people need to mature and Hitler was hardly the first vicious ruler and terrible tyrant. Rome tolerated the likes of Nero, but few nations would tolerate either Hitler or Nero today; more importantly the world would not tolerate it.

The human rights abuses we see in Mymar get our attention because of what happened to the Jewish people in the Holocaust. The fact that humanity could sink that low and increase the killing technology to make a profit at it is a horror that won't leave our minds for centuries. Nor will the horror of atomic weapons.

If I could have saved the writings in the Library of Alexandria I could have shaved at least 100 years off the Dark Ages.

A good question. A good answer is to have Barry Goldwater defeat Johnson in the 1964 election. The "Great Society" giveaway and its creation of trillions in debt would be unknown. A far greater percentage of the population would consider responsibility preferable to dependence. Honor and love of country would have been widespread without the extra impetus provided by 9/11. I could keep this answer going right through the next several days!
