Are there really any unemployed people that are spending 40 hours a week looking for a job, and are willing to take any job?

I don't think so. I think the unemployed are people that are picky about the job they're looking for, and can afford to be unemployed, and often times actually enjoy their time while not having to go to work everyday.

Coach,
you asked me what I think. I think people should work hard at their job, at finding a job, and at their career. They should live where there is work, they should train to be employable, and they should work hard at finding a job. They should blame themselves, not the government. They can change themselves easier than they can change the government, and it puts them in control of their fate.

If you're able bodied. Yep, it's a choice.

I am unemployed and not by choice. I was laidoff because the customer orders dropped off and the economy for that sector isn't doing so well. I cannot afford to be unemployed for a long time. Do you think I enjoy being unemployed? How about the stress of not being able to pay bills? How about the insomnia at night? The reason why I have to be picky is because getting a part time job at McDonalds simply won't be enough to pay for the bills. If I could get several part time jobs, that would be ok. But if you get a part time job then you have to get another part time job that will work with the hours you get already and that doesn’t always work. But life isn’t fair and there is no guarantee I can get anything. That minimum wage increase hurt because everything went up to pay for that wage increase. It hasn't helped me at all. Your comment is easy to say if you have a job and make a generalized statement because you don't really know. The only reason I am surviving is because I have friends and family helping me out. I signed up for unemployment which isn't nearly enough and it requires me to find two jobs per week. I have been doing more than that, but I am grateful for what I can get. Some people probably do not have unemployment insurance because some companies do not pay for that and/or some people didn’t save their money for a rainy day. Not everyone is as lucky as me.

This question is always so moronic. A job is a business, albeit a personal one, and your body/mind is your tool to do that job. But the problem with many things now is that all the jobs people go on about aren't paying enough to support that tool, let alone add in the profit that is expected in any business.

Yes there are jobs available, yes many unemployed persons are unemployed for lack of working at ANY job.

But most of those same people are tired of being ripped off by their employers who use government, clout, etc to maintain their position of "ownership" that constantly forces these unemployed to work for the menial wages that people like you call them lazy for refusing.

I pose the question: would you surrender an entire year of your life for 7.00/hr surrendered? Answer this then decide if these people are really lazy or if they just want a better investment to put their most valuable commodity of all, their own life, into.

Of course they're going to be picky. Wouldn't you? You're unemployed from a $50,000 a year job. Are you going to work for minimum wage? Time wasted doing that is time not spent looking for a better job.

Looking for work is stressful and self-depreciating. If some can afford to be unemployed for a while, good for them.

To a point. I am looking currently for a better situation while working on my own. I have the ability to do this. But then there are circumstances like the unemployable and the system abusers. There are also people whos skills dont match the current needs. I think we should look at whats behind the numbers before we make blanket news blurb style statements.

No. There are NOT enough jobs in the country to employ everyone who seeks one.

This does NOT mean that everyone without employment seek employment. Some people are unemployed due to their own lack of drive. Others are unemployed due to lack of opportunity. There is no one size fits all.

In my case, yes. I stopped working in 2005. I'm on permanent vacation and I'm too young to retire. I would work under the right circumstances. But after having worked nights and weekends for years and years, I'm pretty picky about what I do.

Somewhere in between - but with 4.6% unemployment and with the awful service you get at most retail establishments, clearly anyone who is remotely functional has a job, and many who are not functional also have one.

Chiguy again, the unemployment rate is 4.6% - - - - at the PEAK of the interest rate cycle. There are PLENTY of jobs to go around.

You have 3 types of people.
The first are the people that work, then you have the people that are disabled, so far so good.

Then you have the people that have no intention of working. That is the problem section.

Throw them off unemployment and let them get jobs

Yes.
I hate to admit it, but there are 12 to 20 million Mexicans working here, because so many of our own whites & blacks won't work.
And Employers still can't get enough help.

I know what some of it is. In this area, many young men are living with girls on welfare, and dealing a few drugs on the side.
They are doing okay. They don't need to work.
