I know it's Gary Bettman

I'm looking for some insight on what their job responsibilities are, their general task, their % vote, what purpose do they serve or are they just the a figure head and the owners puppet

The Commissioner of the NHL is the face of the league for both the players and the owners.

The teams need the league, and the league needs teams in order for the league to exist, and therefore to provide jobs for the players.

The commissioner's role as far as the players is concerned are
1) player's spokesperson (rules committees, etc)
2) provide a place to play
3) answerable for violations that 'tarnish' the league's image

The commissioner's roles as far as the owner's are concerned
1) Owner's spokesperson
2) The face of the league
3) Casts a vote in case of a tie

Gary Bettman's role is similar to the role a Chairman of a Board of Director's has. He's a moderator.
- He leads the dialogue and discussion at the GM meetings
- He leads the dialogue and discussion at the Owners meetings
- He leads the dialogue between the NHL and the outside world

The agendas for the first two are set by the operations group in conjunction with the owners/GMs

Similar to a CEO, he is the 'boss' of the marketing group, the sales group, the stats group, and the operations group

The marketing group is currently run by Brian Jennings. If the owners have ideas, they pass them on to Bettman who passes them on Jennings

The stats group is run by Benny Ercolani, this used to be a huge group based in Toronto (still is) but Gil Stein decimated it back in 1992 and moved a lot of the individual stuff to the teams.

The operations group is run by Colin Campbell and Jim Gregory. This is the group responsible for scheduling, rules, hall of fame, and discipline. Scheduling is done through a computer system. Each team provides a list of preferred dates. Using the current scheduling map (8x vs own division) the computer creates a schedule. In conjunction with the NBA, the schedules are tweaked to ensure no conflicts.

The actual scheduling is determined by the GMs on an ongoing basis (major changes occurred in 1967, 1970, 1972, 1974, 1979, 1981, 1994, 1997, and 2005). The owners determine what would be the ultimate money maker (rivalries vs travel).

Bettman's job is mainly to ensure that all groups are running properly and working well together. He's paid to run the machine, the people below him are paid to BE THE machine.

On a side note:
- The players on a day to day basis are represented by Gary Bettman as he is the commissioner of the league,
- they are represented by the owners of their teams as that is their direct employer,
- and they are represented by the NHLPA as their labour union. As with most unions, their job is to ensure that the players are treated fairly, paid fairly, etc

An example I can use is the TV revenue. The sales and marketing groups solicit bids from various networks. Once the bids are finalized, these are sent to Bettman who presents them to the owners. The owners then vote to accept or reject the deal.

Another example is these games in Europe. In order for these to happen, the Operations group has to get owner's approval. But not the players approval (i.e. the CBA does not cover where players play, only that while under contract, they are obligated to play to get paid)

Now, this isn't to say that the commissioner is perfect. I think he has hired the wrong people for certain jobs, and that is reflected in certain areas. (Marketing, Sales, Rules). Bettman has been a lot more visible than Ziegler (who did a lot of things behind the scenes) and has a lot less power than Clarence Campbell (whom many people think meddled too much).

like all and all adult males who've been the President of the U. S., Gary Bettman takes the brunt of any and all issues undesirable that circulate on. Obama for the U. S. and Bettman interior the NHL. it somewhat is no longer all Bettman's fault. He is going by way of the guidelines. He did no longer make each and every of the guidelines. I doubt he will ever be "thrown out". that's plenty greater probable that he will decide directly to circulate on. My %. to be the hot commissioner while that occurs is Brendan Shanahan. Or Machinehead. He had a terrific play off beard final spring. viphockey is familiar with stuff. He ought to furnish it a circulate, too. besides, he's a pink Wings fan.
