Your body is still healing, inside and out, from the delivery, so pretty much any kind of infection could take hold depending on what you come in contact with those first 6 weeks. UTI's and uterine infections are more common right after delivery, but there are other more serious infections that could develop. I would not risk it. Just trust the doctor's advice.

OWWW!!! Do you really need to do it? I was really pleased when my dr told me I had to have an extra few weeks without sex as I had some post-partum problems. The first time after childbirth was terrifying - I was so reluctant to let ANYONE down there, even my husband.

But at the same time, 6 weeks is a bit of an arbitrary timeframe, if you feel good, have stopped bleeding, didn't have stitches etc, then gentle sex (with a condom, even if you are on the Pill) should be OK. Just make sure you stop if there is any discomfort. Also, if you are breastfeeding, lubrication may be an issue, so make sue you have some KY!

There is a lot of little tears and abrasions in the vagina and cervix, and the inner lining of the uterus where the placenta was attached is healing as well. All of these locations can possibly become infected by bacteria that is present on ANYTHING that you put in the vagina, including your partner's penis.

Infections can range from mild to life-threatening.

Why risk it? There are other ways to be intimate than by having vaginal penetration. 6 weeks isn't that long to wait if you care about your health and well being.
