Why do people spam?

I was wandering why do people spam and make dumb chain letters?

Boredom? Attention seeking? Social retardation?

Because there is money in numbers.

Let's say you have a cruddy little device that you've made that cost about $1.00 to make. You then create an email message and website that OVER promotes this fabulous little gadget and that people would be silly not to pay $20 for this and yet your willing to sell it for a mear $5 plus shipping and handling. Then charge a $1 for handling and the actual cost of shipping. Thus for each and every gadget you sell you make a total of $5. Doesn't sound like a lot.. but .. let's throw some wonderful numbers at it.

There are Millions of people on the internet so you manage to get your hands on an email list of 2 million. You then work out a way to send our your emails using other company's mail servers so it doesn't cost you anything to send them out. So... boom.. you flood the net with 2 million emails about your crappy little gadget. If you only get 5% of these people receiving your email to think about your product you now have 100,000 potential buyers! If you can only sucker 10% of those into buying your product you have just sold 10,000 items for a whopping profit of $50,000!

There you go, econimcs of size!

I HATE SPAM!... but you can see why it's done.

I presume you're referring to youtube spam which I hate as does everyone else but these lowlifes that post crap sites like FLINGDATE.COM or whatever do earn money from using the spambot, theres always a minority out there that try and spoil a good concept. Funnily enough I've just been watching some anti lisa nova videos, shes got that type of face you just wanna smack, but she uses a spambot but they wont close her account as she makes youtube money, the *****!

because spamming works, it costs very little to send emails and if they only get a few replies those replies can make the whole exercise worthwhile from a financial point of view.

People get bored, so they write their own chainletters and/or send them. As for spam, it is just another way to advertise.
